The Author used humanity’s oldest fear to create horror in a post apocalyptic world. Fear of the unknown is the core theme which drives the narrative of this book. People fear what they can’t see or understand and the author used this fact (literally) to amplify the horror. The book also does a good job in creating tense situations where fear becomes a common feeling. Apart from that, the book also explores mother-child relationship and how cold a mother can become to her own children in order to protect them in an unforgiving world.
